Tools and arranging
How to move, turn, resize and line up the entities in your scene (anything placed in it; see the glossary).
Transform tools
- Click an entity in the viewport (the 3D view) to pick it.
- Pick a tool from the row of buttons under it.
- Drag the coloured handles that appear on the entity. Each handle works along one direction.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Focus | Moves the camera to look at the entity. It doesn't change the entity. |
| Move | Drag a handle to slide the entity that way. |
| Rotate | Drag a ring to turn the entity. |
| Scale | Drag to make it bigger or smaller. |
| Duplicate | Makes a copy and picks the copy, so you can move it away straight after. |
| Delete | Removes what you picked. |
These tools change the entity's Transform: its position, rotation and size. See components.
Snapping
Snapping makes entities jump in fixed steps instead of moving freely, so pieces line up.
Grid snapping is on each time you open the editor. The grid button in the viewport turns it on or off.
| Tool | Grid snapping on | Grid snapping off |
|---|---|---|
| Move | 0.5 units | 0.05 units |
| Rotate | 45° | 1° |
Keep it on for building: half-unit steps keep floor pieces like citykitfloor16x16 flush against each other, and 45° steps keep corners square. Turn it off to place small props exactly.
Arranging a selection
The arrange toolbar shows up as soon as you select anything, and grows as the selection does. To pick several, Shift+click them, or use the box select button in the viewport.
| Tool | Effect | Shown when |
|---|---|---|
| Align | Lines the selection up on the X, Y or Z axis — to the start, the centre or the end. | two or more selected |
| Distribute | Spreads it along an axis, either with equal gaps or with no gaps at all. | two or more selected |
| Group | Collects the selection under one node so it moves as a unit. | two or more selected |
| Ungroup | Breaks a group back apart. | a group is selected |
X, Y and Z are the three directions in the scene: X is side to side, Y is up and down, Z is front to back.
Sitting entities on surfaces
Two tools deal with the height problem, and both work on a single entity:
- Drop onto surface below moves what you picked straight down, once, until it sits on whatever is under it. Use it when a prop is hovering above the floor.
- Surface snap stays on until you turn it off. While it's on, moving an entity keeps it sitting on whatever is under it, so you can slide a chair across a floor.
Undo and redo
The undo and redo buttons in the header take back your last action — Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z do the same (⌘Z and ⌘⇧Z on a Mac). Hover either one and it names the action it would take back, so you can see what you are about to lose.
Everything you do to the scene is one step: placing, moving, rotating, scaling, duplicating, deleting, grouping, ungrouping, dragging in the explorer, renaming, aligning, distributing, dropping onto a surface, and every field you change in the inspector.
Three things it does not cover:
- Fifty steps. Older ones fall off the end.
- This tab only. A reload starts a fresh history, and undo never takes back a collaborator's edits — only your own.
- Typing. A text field keeps its own undo while you are in it, so
Ctrl+Zthere fixes the word rather than the scene.
Before a big rearrangement, download a .roboworld anyway. That is the restore point undo is not.
