FAQ
Does it cost anything?
No. Robotopia is in free alpha, and the editor is part of it.
Do I need to install anything?
Not for the editor. It runs in your browser at robotopia.gg/editor.
To play your map, you need the Robotopia game installed. The Play button opens your map in it.
Do I have to sign in with Discord?
Yes. Your Discord account is what keeps your maps, lets you share them, and lets you open them on another computer.
Where is the Save button?
There isn't one. Your map saves itself every time you change something.
Want a backup file? Use Download as .roboworld in the ⋯ menu.
Can I undo a mistake?
Yes — the header's undo and redo buttons, or Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z. It remembers your last fifty actions in this tab, and only your own: it will not take back a collaborator's edits. See tools and arranging.
Can other people change my map?
Only if you send them a Collaborate link. Anyone with that link can build in your map with you, and can also change or delete your work. Only share it with people you trust.
Publishing your map does not let anyone change it.
Can I copy someone else's map?
Yes, in two ways:
- For a map someone published, click Copy from a link on the start screen and paste its link.
- For a map someone invited you to with Collaborate, click Make a copy at the top.
Either way you get your own copy, and the original doesn't change. If you build on someone's map, ask them first and give them credit.
Who owns what I make?
You made it, and you can download it as a .roboworld file to keep. The models, voices and other pieces from the library still belong to Robotopia.
Can I use my own 3D models, sounds or pictures?
Not yet. You build with the pieces in the library. Import a file on the start screen opens whole maps, not single models. See what's not possible yet.
Do I have to write everything a robot says?
No. Robots use AI to answer whatever the player says or types, so there's no script to write. You write who the robot is and what it knows. See writing personalities that behave.
Does it cost me anything when players talk to my robots?
No. Talking to robots is part of the game, and you're never charged for it.
Do players talk or type?
Either. Players can speak into a mic or type, and the robot hears both the same way.
Can a player talk a robot out of its personality?
Players will try. That's part of the fun, not cheating. A robot with a reason to say no holds up better than one that's only told to say no. See writing personalities that behave.
Can I play on mobile or Steam Deck?
The game runs on Windows, Mac, Steam Deck and mobile. The editor needs a keyboard, a mouse and a big screen, so build on a computer and play anywhere.
Why can't I publish?
Two usual reasons: the editor found a problem in your map, or it's someone else's map. See troubleshooting.
Why did publishing reject my text?
Publishing checks the names, descriptions, bios and lore in your map. Change the words it didn't like and try again. Nothing else in your map needs fixing.
Can I change a map after I publish it?
Yes. Make your changes and click Publish again.
Can I take a map down?
Not from the editor yet. Ask in Discord.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You make maps by placing pieces and adding components, and you make robots by writing about them in plain words.
Where do I get help?
Discord. If you are reporting a problem with the editor, say what you were doing when it broke and which browser you are on.
Still stuck? Troubleshooting explains the editor's messages, and Discord can help with the rest.
